The City’s Metro Police Department hosted a Youth Leadership Day Camp in partnership with the Western Cape Education Department (Safer Schools) and the City’s Early Childhood and Social Development Department on the weekend of the 25 – 26 February 2023.

The day camp was well attended by 25 learners from Oscar Mpheta High School in Nyanga on Saturday, 25 February 2023 and 26 learners from Rusthoff High School, Strand on Sunday, 26 February 2023.

The Metro Police K9 Unit did a drug awareness show and dog demonstration to inform and educate learners about drugs and firearms.

Officers also taught the learners about problem solving (life skills), peer pressure, bullying, and leadership principles. The City's Early Childhood and  Social Development Department also provided information about teenage pregnancy. The learners were further informed about the effects alcohol and drugs have on babies. The safer school representative focused on safety at schools and how learners can have an impact.

The day camps were visited by the Metro Police Chief Wayne Le Roux and Deputy Chief Christopher Jones who had the same message for the youth, 'You are special, focus on your future and be responsible as youth.'
